Seals: why do we kill them?

Posted on Apr 7th, 2006 by Mira : Astrologer Mira
Update from the Ice:

While in the icy waters of the Gulf, my team of observers and members of the media riding in our boats were continually harassed by sealers. Here is just a glimpse of what our dedicated team of experts witnessed and endured: On the second day of the hunt, a sealing boat rammed one of our small inflatable boats, forcing it onto the ice, damaging the propeller, and endangering the lives of all aboard.

Later in the day, two other sealing vessels repeatedly charged at our inflatable boats, putting all observers at risk of capsizing. When the captain of The HSUS’s nearby vessel twice radioed the Canadian Coast Guard -- which was patrolling the waters ostensibly to ensure the safety of both sealers and observers -- for help, his calls were ignored. After a sealing vessel chased down one of our small boats and forced it to maneuver quickly to avoid being crushed into the ice, officers of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans emerged from the vessel’s cockpit and arrested our team for allegedly violating the terms of our observation permits by supposedly coming within 10 meters of a sealing vessel. Seven legally permitted observers, including representatives of The HSUS and one media representative, were detained, and our footage of the hunt was immediately confiscated. Although no charges have been filed against the observers, Canada's Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has announced that The HSUS will not be allowed to observe the rest of the seal hunt.

Right now we are exploring all legal options available. But here's the real tragedy in this story. Yesterday, the hunt in the Gulf resumed, and it is estimated another 70,000 seals will be clubbed and shot to death over the next few days in this second phase of the hunt. Seals are dying at this moment by the tens of thousands, just for their fur.

And by the time this year’s hunt closes in May, more than 325,000 baby seals will be dead in total, each one sacrificed for the relatively few dollars furriers pay for their skins.

I sincerely hope that this misfortune serves as a wake up call to all those who have slept on this issue. It's a shame that Canada has approved this genocide.

An update from Canada:
………..

Hunters 'blockade' seal activists

Anti-seal hunt activists in Canada say fishermen and hunters have trapped them in their hotel in Quebec to stop them documenting a cull.

About a dozen activists and journalists say some 60 angry locals prevented them from leaving the hotel in Blanc-Sablon, on the border with Newfoundland.

Members of Humane Society International said that earlier their van had been run off the road.

About 325,000 harp seal pups will be shot or beaten in the annual cull.

Rebecca Aldworth, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society of the United States, said the situation at the hotel in Blanc-Sablon, 600km (375 miles) north-west of St John's Newfoundland, was tense.

“There's only two police officers out there. They could get us out of here if they wanted to, but they're refusing to take us in their police vans.”

Mark Glover, from Humane Society International, said: “They've wrecked one of the vehicles we were in. It is an extremely dangerous and uncomfortable position to be in.”

Ms Aldworth said a van taking journalists to the airport to catch a helicopter to document the cull was rammed and run off the road.

“When they left, they were followed by a mob and people who were pounding on the van,” she said.

The journalists had to make their way back to the hotel.

The cull of 91,000 seals in the Gulf of St Lawrence was completed last week. The hunt for the remaining pups moved to Newfoundland on Wednesday.

Dear Mira,

I have read what you have written on 22-03, 08-04 and 14-04-2006 about the merciless and barbaric killing of the seals in Canada islands and how different visitors and seal activist are 'illegally' and inhumanly being debarred from visiting places of the butchery and how even the Government agencies arrested the innocent visitors in order to hide the Truth from the world at large. I think you were perhaps personally present among the team of observers arrested by the Officers of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans of the Government of Canada.
The entire practice and the attitude of the sealers and even the Officers of the Department of Fisheries and Ocean is completely inhuman and barbaric. It is most uncivilised, cruel.

When I was a small child and would not sleep, my mother would tell me stories of demons and their cruel and demoniac, terrifying and horrible activities. They would terrify and eat the human beings. The humans hated them, but were also afraid of them and could not help themselves, till a Prince would come and kill the demons.

Now I feel and see that the humans have become the demons. The entire living world, including the human beings themselves, are afraid of the humans. We eat and kill every living being for our self-interest. The consciousness is submerging more and more into The Abyss, as told by  the Mother [Mira Alfassa].

While Zaadz is dreaming and thinking and trying to change the World obviously into a far better and more beautiful and worthier place, these torturous genocide of the seals, under the cover and protection of the Government officers of Canada, is definitely standing as a great, very great obstacle on our way.

The genocide of the baby seals is not a new thing. You can find some reference to it in one of the recorded and published conversations of The Mother [Mira Alfassa] back in 1969, which I am quoting here below for ready reference and perusal by the members of Zaadz :

October 11, 1969

Oh, a few days ago I was told a frightful story what depths humanity has sunk to … it’s unbelievable. Have you heard this story of the slaughter of the baby seals?

When seals are born (a certain species of seals), they’re all white, and they remain so for a few weeks, then they lose their hair and turn gray, — gray or yellowish, like their fathers and mothers. And as it is the fashion to wear all white fur coats, some people … It’s organized by some trader or other: seals gather at the time of giving birth, there is a place there, in the North, on an island, where they gather in their thousands, and each member give birth to a single child. So these people go there in boats, fully equipped, and when the seals are born, they kill them — thousands of them at one go. It takes ten or fifteen skins to make a coat. And they slaughter them. But for the carnage to be cheap (you understand, it should not cost too much), they club the animals on their heads, then with big butchers’ knives, they skin them on the spot — skin them while they are alive….

That is to say … it seems they shriek, you know, they aren’t dumb…. It seems the mothers ( they have just given the birth, you see, they are suckling the pups ) try to defend them — so to prevent them from seeing what goes on, they put out their eyes … Well, when I was told that, I saw a humanity sinking into … an abyss of ignominy.

… Why, why? And those women who wear that … all those animals’ suffering, all those animals’ horror, their terror — they wear all that on their backs. And it doesn’t give them nightmares!… Unbelievable.

It seems the fashion is to go dancing wearing a stole made of two or three skins of those poor beasts….

People are getting insane!

It’s only one example, one sort of epitome. But this ignoble consciousness is everywhere on earth…. I saw it like that. But it’s one thing that has as if crystallized to awaken the reaction.

Oh, those little ones …

Seals are very highly evolved animals, they are not among the unconscious ones. …

It’s not so much for those poor little ones, because they have a special protection (all that is conscious in them is like that, cherished). It’s the ignominy of humans: they must become conscious of their ignominy — they fid it quite natural….

Oh, it’s the humans, because even animals are not so disgusting….

A beast like a tiger or lion kills only when it’s hungry. But to make money —this is to make money …. With the women, it’s unconsciousness ; I am sure a vast majority of those who wear that, if they were told, “ You’re wearing on you the skin torn from a living and shrieking animal,” it would give them nightmares —the vast majority. Very few would say, “Why should I care !” Very few.

But the brutes are the ones who are getting rich.

There has been no cahnge, no improvement in the demoniac downfall of the human beings into the Abyss. We are descending slowly but surely into the Inconscience.

Only we can help ourselves.
A world-wide voice should be raised against the issue, immediately and now.

Barin,

Thank you so much for your thoughts. This is just insane, to kill babies of any species in the world - just for the sake of “fashion”.

We need to work more on raising awareness of women and men that enjoy wearing baby skins as coats. When they stop buying fur, there will be no reason to kill seals…

Wearing fur is crime. Crime against the Nature and the World.
